1 | Create Height and Grandeur

If you have a smaller room that feels a little too cozy, you can create the illusion of space with this trick that creates height and grandeur. Simply hang your window treatment high and wide. Mount the curtain rod or housing 8 to 12 inches above the window frame or directly at the ceiling. This leads the eye upward, drawing attention to vertical space and fooling the eye by boosting perceived ceiling height. 

If you are layering custom drapes over your blinds or shades, you can also make a room feel wider by extending the curtain rod 8 to 12 inches past the window casing on both sides. When the curtains are opened, they sit entirely on the wall, exposing the full glass pane. This makes your window feel larger and maximizes natural light!

2 | Create Elegance and Volume

Layering custom drapes over shades, blinds, or shutters can create a luxurious look that adds elegance and volume for a more cozy feel. To achieve this, opt for custom drapes that pool slightly on the floor. Stopping curtains at the window sill visually chops up the wall and makes a room feel stunted. 

You should also opt for drapery that is two to two and a half times the width of the window. Skimping on fabric makes a treatment look flat and cheap while deep folds add rich texture and visual volume for a cozy and elegant feel.

3 | Creating Vibes: Airy or Cozy

You can create “vibes” with your window treatment just by choosing a certain type of fabric. To create a light and airy feel, opt for materials that are lighter and more sheer. This bounces light around to make your spaces feel brighter and more spacious.

To create a more cozy space, opt for materials that are darker and heavier. These will absorb light to create a cozy space with a touch of drama. 

4 | Creating Dimension

We love a little pattern play! Patterns can also create an optical illusion. Vertical stripes draw the eye up and down, making your window and wall seem taller. Horizontal stripes draw the eye side-to-side, making a narrow window or wall feel significantly wider. 

5 | Camouflaging Awkward Windows 

There’s always that one awkward window. You know the one–the slightly off-center one, the one with that awkward trim. But don’t worry, window coverings are here to save the day! For the off-center window, extend your window treatment to mask the window’s actual placement and make it appear centered.

Remove those harsh borders by painting the trim to be the same color as your wall space.
