6 Designer Worthy Window Covering and Layering Tips that Bring the Wow Factor!

Layering your window treatments creates a luxurious look full of depth. Just think of how grand custom drapes look layered over interior shutters! Layering treatments shouldn’t skimp on functionality though. In fact, functionality should be a top consideration. In this article, we’ll take a look at top tips for layering window treatments to create a polished, designer-worthy look.

1 | Don’t Skimp on Functionality

Your window treatments should not only be beautiful, but functional too. When you layer treatments, you should always have a treatment that provides the functionality you need–this means control over privacy and light filtering. Roller shades, cellular shades, blinds, and interior shutters are all perfect functional treatments that can be layered with custom drapes.

2 | Consider Textures, Materials, and Colors

Layering window coverings gives you the opportunity to play with textures and materials. A good rule of thumb is to have one “smooth” bottom layer, such as roller shades, blinds, interior shutters, or roman shades with very structured pleats, plus one textured top layer, like linen curtains, that adds a touch of texture and depth.

Color palette is also an important consideration. We recommend keeping your base layer a neutral, lighter tone and then adding patterns or brighter/darker colors on the top layer.

3 | Hang Rods High and Wide

Since most layering of window treatments includes custom drapes, you’ll need a curtain rod. Hang your rods high and wide, mounting them 4 to 6 inches above the window frame. If you have short ceilings and/or small windows, consider mounting the curtain rod near the ceiling to make your windows larger or your wall taller.

4 | Grace the Floor

To create the polished designer look, drapes should also gently hover above or touch the floor. If you want something more luxurious, consider allowing your drapes to puddle a bit on the floor. This option is good for master bedrooms, but not good in high traffic areas.

5 |  Consider the View

We aren’t just talking about the view you see from inside your home, but what the outside of your home looks like. When layering treatments, you want the back side of your treatments to look consistent across your home. Custom drapes should all have the same color lining, creating a streamlined and polished view of your home!

6 | Hire Professionals!
