Rooms to Update for Guests Plus Recommended Window Treatments
Having family over for the holidays? Now is the time to refresh your tired old window treatments with new custom window coverings! Not only can new window treatments impress your family and friends, but it’s also a great gift to give yourself this year.
Rooms and the Window Treatments We Recommend
We understand that not everyone can afford to update all their window treatments throughout their house at once. Here are the rooms we recommend updating, from first to last, if you are on a budget. Plus, we give our suggestion of what window treatments are best for each room listed.
Guest Room
We are all guilty of putting our guest rooms on the back burner. It’s the room we spend the least amount of time in so we often think about it last. But after a nice mattress and pillows, the other thing that makes your guests comfortable is a good window covering!
Guest room window treatments should offer privacy and help darken the room for a good night’s sleep. We recommend these window treatments:
- Blinds: This is one of the most popular options as it allows your guests full control of light filtering and privacy. Both wood and faux wood options are perfect for guest rooms.
- Shades: Shades offer a softer touch and come in a variety of shade types, styles, colors, and patterns.
- Interior Shutters with Drapes: Interior shutters offer the same control as blinds, but are the only treatment to add value to your home. For bedrooms, we recommend layering a soft treatment over your shutters, such as drapes or shades for a softer, more luxurious feel.
Dining Room
The holiday season is about getting together, giving gifts, and of course–eating lots of food! Updating your formal dining room window treatments can help set the stage for a joyous holiday meal.
Unlike bedrooms, the first goal for dining rooms isn’t privacy, but creating a luxurious and homey space. Soft treatments or layered treatments are perfect for formal dining rooms. We recommend:
- Interior Shutters with Drapes: Interior shutters are the most desirable window treatment and actually add value to your home. They look great from inside and outside, which is a plus if your dining room looks over your front yard, and offers full control. Create a more luxurious feel by layering a soft treatment such as valances or drapes over the top.
- Shades: Shades are classy and offer a luxurious look to any formal dining room. Try going bold with a fun pattern or keep it neutral with a soft cream linen fabric–the choices are endless!
Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home and we all spend lots of time in the kitchen during the holidays. If your current window treatments are stained with grease, or have just seen better days, it’s time for an update!
Because kitchens are full of humidity and grease, we recommend sticking to faux wood hard window treatments that stand up to the environment. We recommend:
- Faux Wood Blinds or Composite Interior Shutters: Both of these hard treatments are perfect for kitchens. They both give you full control for light filtering and privacy as needed. But because they are faux wood, you can easily clean grease splatters from them and they also stand up to humidity without warping.
Your Bedroom
Finally, if it’s in your budget, we recommend updating your own bedroom window treatments. Hosting family and friends during the busy holiday season can be stressful. So give yourself the best sleep you can get but create a relaxing retreat that allows you to fall asleep and stay asleep easily.
Check out treatments that offer room darkening or blackout linings that help you get some of your best sleep. We recommend the same types of window treatments as we listed under the guest room section. You can add linings to shades and drapes for a darker evening retreat.
