Whether you are new to buying window treatments or not, all of the options and decisions to be made can be overwhelming. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether your window covering needs to be an inside mount or an outside mount. What’s the difference, and which is right for your window and needs? Keep reading to find out!

What is an Outside Mount for Window Treatments?

Most people who have hung their own blinds are probably familiar with this method of mounting a window treatment. An outside mount is when you hang your window covering above the window frame (opening) on the wall or trim. With this application, the window treatment is slightly wider than your window.

What is an Inside Mount for Window Treatments?

An inside mount is when the window covering is hung inside the window opening, or frame. The window treatment brackets are either screwed into the top of the window frame, or on either side of the opening. Because the window treatment is the same width of your window opening, this provides a clean, finished look and doesn’t cover decorative moulding.

When and Why Should I Choose an Inside Mount?

We almost always recommend an inside mount. However, your window frame will need to have enough depth to hang your window treatment. Most inside mounts require a few inches of window depth to anchor the brackets on. It’s important to check the specs on your selected window treatment before purchasing to see what these depth requirements are.

By hanging your window treatment this way, your treatment will stay out of the way, safe from getting knocked around by kids or pets running past, or the errant elbow. We’ve all had an accident with a bent blind slat, and while they can be replaced, it’s a task that can take a little bit of time.

When and Why Should I Choose an Outside Mount?

We recommend an outside mount for your window treatment when the window frame is too shallow to accommodate an inside mount, or when there are obstructions, like a window crank, security sensor, or other object that prevents your treatment from lowering all the way. Having decorative trim or tiling on the inside of the window frame could get damaged by an inside mount, also making outside mount the more ideal option.

Other benefits that an outside mount provides is less gaps that cause light leaks when your window covering is fully closed. This can be ideal for nurseries, bedrooms, or media rooms as it provides better room darkening. An outside mount can also camouflage odd-shaped or off-center windows. You can also hang the window treatment further above the window to give the illusion of taller windows.

1 | Blinds Give You Full Light Filtering Control

With blinds, you get absolute control. If you want as much sunlight as possible, pull the cord up and fully open them. You want to darken your room to watch a movie or go to bed? Fully close and tilt the slats. If you want something in between, then tilt your slats to get just the perfect amount of sunlight.

Treatments with more voluminous pleats add bulk to the top of your window and can make a ceiling appear heavy and even lower. Another trick is to use vertical stripes to help the walls appear taller. Or you can try an outside mount, hanging the treatment as high as you can above the window (which is great for custom drapes, which can be layered over other hard treatments like blinds or interior shutters).

Issue: Casement Windows

Casement windows typically hinge open on the side, rather than being opened and closed by pulling or pushing a part of the window up and down. While this has its advantages, it can mean you need to take extra consideration when it comes to window coverings.

The best window treatments give you access to the mechanism to easily open and close your window. Some of our favorite options include blinds and interior shutters. Another good option is top-down bottom-up cellular shades.

Issue: That Odd-Shaped Window

Whether it’s a bay window, an arch, a sidelight, or an octagon, these odd windows can be a problem to cover for privacy and light filtering reasons. Odd shapes present more of a challenge than your basic square or rectangle.

When it comes to window coverings, there are so many options out there it can be overwhelming. So if you are trying to decide between blinds and shades, you’ve come to the right place. Both of these window treatments are very popular and each have their own unique set of benefits for your home.
In this guide, we’ll be diving into the differences and benefits of both blinds and shades, plus things you should consider when deciding between these two fantastic window treatment options.
Blinds vs. Shades: What’s the Difference? It is common for people to use the terms shades and blinds interchangeably. But these are actually two distinct types of window coverings.
Blinds Blinds are considered a “hard window treatment” because they are made from rigid materials (wood, faux wood composite, or aluminum). They also have slats that can be tilted to control light filtering.
Shades Shades , on the other hand, are considered a “soft window treatment” because they are made of fabric. They only have two positions, open or closed, however, depending on the fabric weave openness, light can filter through while still remaining closed for privacy.
Blinds vs. Shades: What are the Benefits and Downsides of Each? We touched on this just a bit above when discussing the features and differences of each of these window covering options, but let’s delve into this a bit further.
Blinds Blinds are perhaps the most popular window covering, and for good reason. You get full light filtering and privacy control thanks to the slatted design. Tilt the slats to an angle and you get gentle light filtering. But you can also tilt them fully open for a nearly unobstructed view and plenty of light. Want a completely unobstructed view? Simply pull your blinds up!
You can also choose from a variety of materials and color/stain options to suit your tastes and home decor style. With wood blinds, you can opt to color match the existing woods in your home. You can also choose cordless or corded. (We recommend cordless for homes with pets or small children, as cords can pose a strangulation hazard.)
Blinds are relatively easy to clean and maintain. Simply dust the slats, cords, and valance to keep your blinds in good working order. Faux wood blinds are great for homes with kids and pets because they are easy to clean; you can even soak them in your tub or take them outside to hose them off! Whether we have an older home or a newer one, most of us have an odd window. From small windows to story windows, and bay windows to arched windows, the experts at Elevated Views have seen and dealt with it all!
If you have a tough window to cover, here are some options that might work for you.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are a wonderful place to enjoy the view, some great light, and kick up your feet while enjoying a good book and some tea. However, the biggest concern is ensuring that your window treatments don’t bump into one another, such as the edges of blinds. This can cause damage to your window treatment. Custom window treatments are key to covering your bay windows properly as they will be made to the exact right size. Some popular options for bay windows include blinds, roman shades, and cellular shades.

Oversized Windows

Extra large windows, like bay windows, are wonderful for their views and letting in tons of natural light. But sometimes we do want privacy or light filtering capabilities from the large expanse of window. The problem is that certain window treatments can be too heavy, especially when pulled open. This can cause the entire window treatment to come tumbling down. We do not recommend wood or faux wood blinds for these large windows because when pulled open they can create a lot of stress on the screws holding your window treatment up.
However, there are plenty of other options, such as vertical shades, vertical panels, cellular shades, roller shades, and solar shades. Keep in mind that solar shades do not provide privacy at night, but do provide light filtering during the day.

French Doors, Doors with Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors

These are windows in functioning doors. The biggest issue people have is that their window treatment slams around as the door is opened and closed or they have to move the window treatment out of the way to access the door. Just about any window treatment can work here.
For french doors and other doors with windows in them, the key is to opt for custom which ensures you have access to your door handles. You also want to have a mechanism that tacks the bottom of the window treatment in place so that it does not move when the door is opened and closed, keeping it from banging around and getting damaged.
For sliding glass doors, we recommend vertical blinds, vertical panels, cellular shades, or sliding interior shutter panels. Vertical blinds and panels, as well as cellular shades, allow you to slide the treatment side-to-side to easily access your door. Sliding shutter panels are similar, in that you can slide the panel to the side to access your door, however, we do note that half of your sliding glass door will always be covered with panels when you push one to the side.

Small Windows

Small windows can accept just about any window treatment, however, the key here is to use design to make your window appear larger than it is. A roman shade may make your window look smaller, however, light fabrics and colors can help if you really do want a roman shade. Window treatments that allow for a better view and more light, even when pulled closed, can help your windows appear larger. Some great treatments include blinds, sheer shades, and solar shades.

Story Windows and Other Hard-to-Reach Windows

Story windows are small windows that are up high. They are often small squares closer to the ceiling, or a long rectangle over the top of another window. Generally, privacy is not an issue here, and it is often light control that is what is being sought. We recommend pleated shades or honeycomb shades for story windows, sunlights, and other high up and hard-to-reach windows. If you wish to be able to open and close them, we recommend opting for motorized shades that allow you to control them with a remote control or voice command.

You have an open concept floor plan and the open areas and the adjoining rooms have different functions. Because of those different functions, you may be wondering if your window treatments all have to match or if you can choose different treatments for different areas based on the function of the room.
You might be afraid that going super “matchy-matchy” could mean that you have to select one window treatment based on the most important room function and put it throughout your home. But we’re here to tell you that you don’t have to have the same exact window treatment throughout your home.
But just how much difference can you have throughout your home before it starts to look like a mismatched nightmare?
Here are some tips to help you select the right window treatments for your open concept home.

1 | Focus on Creating a Coherent Look

First and most importantly, your goal is to create a coherent look. In other words, you want a unified look between individual areas. This doesn’t mean you have to get the same window treatment in the exact same color for every room. However, it does mean picking one consistent element to stick with throughout the different areas of your open floor plan home. By picking that one consistent design element, you can select different window treatments from room to room.
Here are the different design elements you can select from to keep consistent throughout your home:

The Texture: Similar textures give your window treatment consistent character and that one treatment won’t feel out of place. For example, you could have different woven shades throughout your home, made of different natural materials or have slight variations in color. So the easiest thing to do is select a color scheme that allows for change.
These color schemes are often neutrals, such as whites, creams, grays, or blacks. By having a neutral backdrop on your windows, you can easily switch out your rug anytime it needs to be replaced.
What does this mean for the three design elements you can select from to focus on? If you’ve chosen color already, then great! If you select to play with color by focusing on the type of window treatment or the texture, you can still play with color. Try different neutrals in different rooms–like a bedroom, while keeping the same neutral in the open areas of your home.

3 | When Should Treatments Match?

If you opt to play with texture or type, there is one time when you want your window treatments to match.
